Here's a list of some books I have read. They're not all great, but I think they're all worth reading. This list is not complete and in no particular order.

The Messenger by Charles Wright.

A Patten Language. It describes a series of reoccuring patterns in the design of towns, places, buildings, and proposes certain general solutions. The idea being to stimulate people to come up with their own pattern language, based on the particularities of their community.

One Dimensional Man by Herbert Marcuse.

Energy and Equity by Ivan Illich. Discusses the so-called energy crisis. The author's thesis is that beyond a certain threshold increased energy use will lead to less equity. The private automobile creates distances for all that only it can shorten. People are forced to spend their time being shutlled around or paying for it. Public transportation can at best make people suffer equally. His solution is to make a (political) decision to limit speed and distances, so that people are free to walk or bike, instead of consuming massive amounts of energy.

Global City Blues by Daniel Solomon.

The Immortal Class: Bike Messengers and the Cult of Human Power. Not a bad book, although it is somewhat inconsistent at times. I've heard that the author may have ripped off a lot of the material from other bike messengers. I'll have to check out Nerves of Steel by Lambchop, which is supposed to be more authentic.

A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole.

American Project: The Rise and Fall of a Modern Ghetto by Sudhir Alladi Venkatesh.

Walden by Henry David Thoreau
